Traveling alone: preparing, feeling safe and knowing people
A guide to the first solo journey: destination, routine, security, social moments and loneliness management.
The first trip alone should not be long or spectacular. It must allow you to understand how you react when all decisions depend on you. A well prepared weekend offers more useful information than an ambitious start addressed with anxiety.
Choose a destination with low friction
To start you prefer simple connections, arrival of day, legible transport and a neighborhood with services within walking distance. You do not need to choose the safest destination in absolute: you need to know risks, distances and alternatives before arriving.
Prepare only the stop points
Define accommodation, initial transfer and a first activity. It leaves room for decisions on the spot, but keeps offline maps, copies of documents and essential addresses. Communicate to a trusted person itinerary and indicative times without posting them on social media in real time.
Keep practical autonomy
Use separate payments, limit cash, do not leave documents as a guarantee and check official destination alerts. If you know someone during the trip, the first meeting remains in a public place and your accommodation must not immediately become a shared information.
Create social opportunities compatible with you
Walking tours, short courses, common tables and daytime activities make it natural to speak without engaging the whole day. If you are introverted, choose events with a central activity: having something to do reduces the pressure of having to entertain strangers.
Treat empty moments as part of the journey
Loneliness does not indicate that the departure was a mistake. Alternate challenging activities and breaks, keep a regular contact with home and allow you to change program. If you want company for a part of the route, define first duration and expectations.
- Arrival and check-in on time
- Offline map and useful contacts
- Appropriate travel insurance
- A person informed about the program
- An optional social activity
