The fear of travelling alone does not disappear waiting for the perfect moment. It is reduced by transforming a huge project into small and verifiable tests.
Saying “I’m afraid” can indicate different things: security, loneliness, language, orientation or fear of not having fun. As long as an indistinct block remains, it seems impossible to deal with. Writing exactly what you fear allows instead to associate at each point an action: to inquire, try, ask for help or choose a less challenging context.
Give a name to the real fear
Split a sheet into two columns: in the first write the scenarios that concern you, in the second what you can do to reduce probability or consequences. If you’re afraid to lose, download maps and test in a new area of your city. If you fear dinner alone, experience it near home. The body learns from experience more than reassuring.
A practical method to apply
Use a gradual scale. Start with half a day alone, then a trip, one night and finally a weekend. After every test note what went well and what you would change. Do not simultaneously increase distance, duration and complexity: change a variable at a time, so you understand what competence you are training.
- Specific fear: transforms “will go wrong” into a concrete and observable scenario.
- Countermeasures: prepares a simple response, such as an offline contact or map.
- Next try: simulates the situation in a family environment before departure.
- Debrief: write after the experience what you managed better than expected.
Errors that complicate everything
Waiting to feel completely ready keeps the fear intact. Even immediately choosing a long journey to “push” can be counterproductive: if the intensity exceeds the available resources, the brain records negative confirmations. Graduality does not mean lack of courage, but effective learning.
The choice that really works
The goal is not to become a person who does not feel fear. It is to know that when uncertainty appears, you have tools to decide and ask for help. You may find that you still prefer to travel with you: this is also a valid answer, as long as you arrive from a choice and not from a never verified block.
